On this deeply moving excursion from Prague, we’ll begin with a comfortable ride to Terezin, just 45-50 minutes away. As we travel, your guide will provide an insightful introduction to the history of Terezin and its role during World War II. Upon arrival, we’ll step into the Theresienstadt Fortress, an 18th-century military stronghold built by Emperor Joseph II, originally designed as a defense against Prussian aggression. This massive fortress later became infamous during the war, serving as a Nazi concentration camp. As we walk through the fortress, you’ll feel the weight of its dark history, marked by its vast walls and haunting atmosphere.

Next, we’ll visit the Ghetto Museum, housed in the Magdeburg Barracks, where the tragic stories of over 150,000 Jewish men, women, and children are documented. The exhibits, filled with personal stories, photographs, and historical documents, provide a powerful look into the lives of those who were forced to endure the hardships of Terezin. The museum paints a poignant picture of the suffering, strength, and survival within the ghetto.

From the museum, we’ll take a short walk across the Ohře River to the Small Fortress, which once served as a Gestapo prison for political prisoners and resistance members. The infamous “Arbeit Macht Frei” inscription above the entrance sets the somber tone as we tour the site. Inside, we’ll explore the prison barracks, isolation cells, execution grounds, and workshops—each space a chilling reminder of the brutality faced by the prisoners.

After exploring the Small Fortress, we’ll visit the crematorium, where many prisoners were cremated. This somber site serves as a haunting reminder of the atrocities committed during the war. Following the visit, we’ll take a moment to reflect and pay our respects at the National Cemetery, where the remains of thousands of victims were exhumed from mass graves and buried with dignity.

Finally, after this deeply moving visit, we’ll head to Litoměřice, a nearby town, for lunch. With its charming town square, Litoměřice offers a peaceful escape and several excellent dining options, giving you a chance to relax and reflect on the day’s powerful experiences. After lunch, we’ll return to Prague, bringing the day to a close with a deeper understanding of Terezin’s history and significance. This trip offers a unique opportunity to step away from the beauty of Prague and engage with the city’s darker history, leaving you with a lasting, meaningful experience.
